The Dixie Cup Company (originally the Individual Drinking Cup Company) established its major manufacturing plant in Easton, PA in 1921. Hugh Moore’s company revolutionized public health by popularizing disposable paper cups, especially during the 1918 flu pandemic when shared drinking cups posed serious risks.
Instead of a traditional water tower, the factory featured a massive, eye-catching replica of their signature product—a giant Dixie Cup—perched on the roof. This clever dual-purpose structure served as both a functional water tank (reportedly 50,000 gallons) and a bold, unforgettable billboard visible for miles around. It helped guide pilots navigating to nearby airports and became a beloved local landmark.

The factory produced millions of the iconic cups we still use today until operations shifted in the early 1980s. The building was later added to the National Register of Historic Places. In a bittersweet moment for locals, the giant cup was carefully removed from the rooftop in April 2026 as the site undergoes redevelopment.
